Working in a Brickell high-rise is a little like living in a small vertical town. There is a downtown’s worth of people, a lobby with a front desk that knows everyone’s name, and a parking garage that is a world of its own. Anyone who has worked in one has a story, and most of them start with the phrase, “So I was circling level six...”
The parking garage saga
Every garage has its personality. Some have ramps so tight you hold your breath and fold in the mirrors on principle. Some have a ticket machine that accepts your ticket with a thoughtful pause, as if it is deciding whether you deserve to leave. And there is always one level that fills up first, which everyone races for, even though the next level up is only a short walk away.
Then comes the great memory test. Where did I park? Experienced garage veterans take a photo of the pillar number. Optimists trust their memory. The optimists are easy to spot at the end of the day, slowly walking a floor while pressing the unlock button on their key and listening hopefully for a chirp.
The elevator is its own social event
Between the lobby and the thirtieth floor, a lot of life happens. There is the elevator that stops on every single floor in the morning. There is the polite silence, in which everyone studies the floor numbers with great interest. And there is the occasional brave person who attempts small talk, which tends to produce either a lovely conversation or a very long ride, depending on the day.
Lunch hour has its own rhythm. Everyone heads down at the same time, then everyone heads up at the same time, and somewhere in the middle there is a delivery person holding three bags and a determined look. If you have ever waited for an elevator that was clearly full of lunch orders, you have our sympathy.
Deliveries and the loading dock
Here is a part of high-rise life that tenants rarely see: the choreography behind every delivery. Buildings tend to have their own loading dock hours, their own check-in desk and their own rules about which elevator can be used and when. Many ask vendors for paperwork before anyone is allowed upstairs. It is one of those quiet details that makes a building run smoothly, and a good reason for a delivery company to be organized and polite with the front desk.
On our side, we deliver around Brickell and downtown, and we are happy to work with the building’s process. Property managers and front-desk teams know their building best, so we follow their lead on timing and where to bring things. It keeps everyone friendly, including the elevator.
The view makes up for it
And then, once you get upstairs, there is the window. The bay, the skyline, a cruise ship going by like a floating apartment building, the occasional afternoon storm rolling in with the drama of a movie trailer. For all the garage circles and elevator pauses, it is a pretty good place to work. You get the coffee, you get the view, and you get an office that, with luck, is stocked with cold water in the corner.
