Game Day in a Miami Office: Dolphins, Heat and Panthers Banter

By Marc Aschoff ·

Miami is a sports town with a lot of opinions and very little patience for a bad third quarter. Between the Dolphins in the fall, the Heat through the winter and spring, and the Panthers keeping the hockey faithful in the building, there is almost always a game the office cares about. And whether the team won or lost, the break room knows about it before nine o’clock.

The Monday-morning replay

There is a very specific energy at the start of the week after a big game. Somebody walks in already mid-sentence, as if the conversation from yesterday never ended. They have thoughts about the coaching, the referee and one particular play that, in their view, changed everything. Their audience is a coffee machine and anyone unlucky enough to walk past.

The beauty of it is that no one needs to have watched the game. You can contribute to a Monday replay armed with nothing but a confident facial expression and the phrase “well, you can’t say that.” It works every time.

The Friday jersey

Right around game week, jerseys start to appear. One coworker wears the team colors from head to toe, a little too proudly for a Friday. Another wears a single modest accessory, a hat or a pin, to signal loyalty without committing to the full look. Then there is the person who supports a team from somewhere else entirely, who is treated with the gentle suspicion reserved for visitors who order a sandwich the wrong way.

It is all good-natured. Offices in this town are full of people who grew up in different cities and moved here, and the rivalry is half the fun. Nobody really wants to win the argument. They just want to keep having it.

Game-night logistics

If you have ever tried to leave downtown on the evening of a big home game, you know the traffic has its own personality. Arrive early, leave late, or settle in and accept it. The office group chat becomes a live traffic report: “Don’t take that exit,” “Seriously, don’t take that exit,” and the inevitable “I took the exit.”

Then there is the next-day recap of who actually made it to the game, who watched from a couch, and who claims they watched but clearly fell asleep in the second quarter. Everyone knows. Nobody says.

The unofficial watch party

Some offices turn the late-afternoon playoff game into a quiet, unofficial event. A screen goes up in the corner. Snacks appear. Work continues, technically, in the same way a river technically continues while it is being watched. In the middle of all of it, the break room is the place to be: a place to stand, talk about the score and top off a cup with something cold.

Hosting a gathering, even a small one, tends to go through more water than anyone planned. It is one of those things you only notice when the jug runs out at the exact moment the game gets tense.

A small, friendly mention

If your office would like to stay stocked through the season, we deliver 5-gallon water jugs across South Florida. It is $13.00 per bottle, $5.00 delivery per order and a 3-bottle minimum, and you can set it up on our order page. Homes are welcome too, and you can see where we deliver on the service areas page.

Go team, whichever one that is. We will keep the water cold and stay out of the argument.

Stocked for the big game

Keep the break room ready for game week. Order 5-gallon jugs for your office or home.
